Rock Critic’s Choice: Fueled and Furious

They tried to make me listen to Retox – the latest album from Norwegian scalawags Turbonegro – and I said yes, yes, YES! Having pledged eternal devotion to these denim-clad reprobates several times in the past, this writer was nevertheless surprised and delighted to find that once again these rocking and rolling Euro types still sound like they look, and looking like they smell as foul as last year’s laundry … and that’s a good thing for a rock and roll band! Last time Turbonegro was here it played a private party at the Knitting Factory and the place could barely contain its sonic lust. This Sunday, the group plays the more sizable Music Box @ Fonda (6126 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood; 9 p.m.), where there should be space aplenty for fans to “sell their bodies to the night” and rock to their hearts’ content. (Turbonegro also plays the Detour Music Festival in downtown L.A. on Saturday.)

But wait! There’s more: In support of the “Turbojugend” at the Fonda, former Queens of the Stone Age bassist – and total rock extrovert – Nick Oliveri leads his Mondo Generator miscreants through their punk-rock paces. Expect some of Nick’s fave Queens tunes, performed with their usual hi-octane power. And leading off the night is thunderous local power trio Year Long Disaster, led by singer-guitarist Daniel Davies and his banshee wail and screaming guitar leads. Quite a show, wouldn’t you agree? (If you miss YLD this time, mark down the group’s appearance at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at Busby’s East, 5364 Wilshire Blvd., Miracle Mile.)
