Enter Shikari; The Cave Singers

Enter Shikari; The Cave Singers

By Joshua Sindell

A British band that’s being hyped to us Americans as the ultimate mash-up of the sounds of rave with the crunch of rock, Enter Shikari, like so many others before it, is bound to raise our natural skepticism. Even if we haven’t heard it before, we have: What’s yet another group with more of those cock-rockin’ beats to us? Still, one listen to its debut disc, Take to the Skies, says more than a sheaf of press clips. This group of very young kids from Saint Albans, London, has succeeded in mixing hardcore’s rush with trance-dance electro-whatever, and the resulting racket makes for some brave entertainment indeed. On the quieter side, new Matador Records signees the Cave Singers roll ’dat ol’ debbil stone sho’ nuff down to the levee an’ back, except they’re Seattle coffeehouse types trying to make us believe they’s raised in some shotgun shack in the deep south in the ’40s. Sometimes, it’s borderline minstrelsy, but damn if dey don’t once in a while convince us to join the congregation via some nicely creepy arrangements and passionate acoustic-guitar playing.
