Taste of Crow … I enjoy all sorts of foods, but have never really developed a taste for crow. Well, I have to dine on crow today, since in a recent column I confused the Breadbar downtown with the one in Century City. To make this clear: Chef Noriyuki Sugie will only be cooking at the Century City location, and only through July 31, as part of their Crudobar series. There is no separate restaurant called Crudobar, and I’m sorry if some of you scoured the phone book and Internet looking for it. My sincere apologies to those who went to the wrong place, and my thanks to everyone who wrote – when you let me know about mistakes, I know you’re reading … .
Get a Room … Il Forno on Ocean Park frequently hosts dinners with adventurous wine pairings, but the double-header they have scheduled in July is still special. On July 21 they’ll host a “Wines of Summer” dinner, and the very next night they will celebrate “Beers of Summer.” (And if you think every beer is a beer of summer, you, grasshopper, have much to learn.) Both events will be hosted by Roberto of Wine Expo, who was interviewed in these pages recently, and both will feature excellent Italian food and beverages worth quaffing. Call (310) 828-4428 to reserve … .
Bazaar Is Just a Little Bizarre … Poetry in PR is one of the delights of the art, and I’ve run across a marvelous example. The new SRS Hotel at Beverly Hills will feature a restaurant called Bazaar, which they promise will be “a roving culinary playground.” Really? Further reading makes it sound a bit like a hyper-elegant food court with several prep stations, focused on Spanish and Californian cuisine. Sounds fun – we’ll know in November when they open ... .
Is That Green Like the Color? ... The Palm downtown announced a “Green Wine Dinner,” which I initially thought might feature wines that are naturally green, such as Portuguese Vinho Verdes, certain Proseccos, and the famous Weibel Green Hungarian. This wouldn’t be a particularly interesting dinner, since all of those have roughly the same flavor profile, but it would be a blast for a St. Patrick’s Day tasting. Closer reading revealed that the dinner is green because Benziger Winery is an enthusiastic proponent of sustainable farming and winemaking. I’ve had some very good wines from Benziger, and you can too if you show up at the Palm on July 10. Call to reserve first – the number is (213) 763-4610 … .
Tequila All the Time … While I’m on the subject of the Palm, they’re producing a tequila dinner that has a fascinating menu. The filet mignon with three potato hash with Poblano peppers, wild mushrooms, and Anejo sauce sounds great, and ice cream with tequila-cinnamon glaze is an amazing idea. At $105 per person it may sound a bit pricey, but for four courses and an array of aged Patron tequilas, it’s not bad at all … .
Thinking Ahead … If you have any affection for Cajun food and music, you should mark Aug. 2 and 3 on your calendar. That’s when the Long Beach Crawfish Festival will feature three of this year’s Cajun and Zydeco Grammy nominees and a supporting cast of tens of thousands of fresh crawfish. Like the music and the bugs? This is the place to be … check longbeachcrawfishfestival.com for more.
