Matthew Sweet and Superdeformed—don’t you dare miss it!

By Matthew Sweet

I’ve seen quite a few Bob Dylan concert posters with this saying: “Don’t you dare miss it!” This amuses me greatly. That somewhere in the back of your mind you might feel like you better go, even if you were thinking of missing it!

Not many people know that since the early ’90s I’ve referred to my band as Superdeformed (I once released a song of the same name). Matthew Sweet and Superdeformed, don’t you dare miss it! We’re going to play live, in person, in this very town!

That’s right, not just me but my longstanding cohorts too will be there to pummel and woo thee in equal amounts, hopefully resulting in an exotically disarming karmic balance not easily achieved without us. Ric Menck, rolling and rambling on drums, Tony Marsico, giving the bass a Mohawk, Peter Phillips screaming and soaring on lead guitar (he has wings, not wax), and Paul Chastain, pickin’ and singin’ all the extra bits of vitamins. Sound good? It’s also good for you!

I’m going to be there to sing my songs and talk a little, and I promise to make up for any imperfections by trying hard and doing my best without losing my sense of humor. I will most certainly introduce you to a lovely jangling 12-string electric friend of mine. I also expect to plumb the depths of the vacuum tube with the talons of a gold-topped 6-stringed beast, technical name p-90 (if you don’t know, don’t ask). It’s a guitar pickup.

If you haven’t guessed, we are celebrating that I have a new album that came out just this week. Yes, it is an album, with a start and a finish. You can buy single tracks, but you’ll have no idea what’s going on, now will you? Sunshine Lies is the name, rock-folk-pop-power-blitz is the game. Be square, be there! But don’t be afraid – we come in peace, to rock you. Oldies but goodies will also be performed to keep the kids satisfied. I will sing my heart out. Don’t you dare miss it!

Love,
Matthew Sweet

Matthew Sweet and Superdeformed play the Echo, (213) 413-8200, Thurs., Aug. 28. 8 p.m. $15-$18. 18+.
